FAQs

We know that storage is not something that everyone is familiar with.  So, to help answer some of the more common questions we get asked we put this handy list of FAQs together.

And, if you can not find what you are looking for please donโ€™t hesitate to call us. Our teams will be happy to help you out.

What is self storage and how does it work?

It’s flexible ‘do-it-yourself’ storage for your home, your business – your life.  Kangaroo Self Storage provides secure, clean, dry individual storage rooms from 16 sq ft up. You store your belongings yourself in your dedicated room – which is locked with your own padlock ensuring that only you have access to your goods.

We also have warehouse space for pallets and bulk storage requirements as well as drive up storage units in Dundee, Widnes, Liverpool and Bromborough.

What do I need to bring to start storing?
  • Two forms of ID, one should be photographic (driver’s licence, passport etc) and the other should have your address on it (utility bill etc)
  • Credit or debit card for initial payment and bank details if you wish to set up a direct debit for future payments
  • An alternative contact name, address and phone number
  • A padlock (we sell them if you forget and they’re not included as part of your package)
  • An estimate of the value of goods to be stored - ideally a completed inventory form
  • Insurance cover note – so that we can verify that your policy covers your goods whilst in storage. If you do not have appropriate insurance cover, don’t worry, we sell 'Customer Goods Protection' on a new replacement basis.
How much does it cost to store my things with you?

The cost of storage depends largely upon the size of storage unit you require.  We suggest that you look at either our size estimator or speak to a member of our staff to determine the optimum storage unit for your requirements.  A price can then be quoted on the correct sized storage room.  There are discounts available for longer-term storage.

What is included in the price – are there any hidden extras?

The price you are quoted by our team includes your storage rental, rates, service charges, utility bills and maintenance costs.

You will need a padlock to secure your room.

And, whilst your goods are in storage you will also need to ensure that you have adequate insurance or similar goods protection in place.

A refundable security deposit equal to two weeks’ storage charge is payable at the commencement of storage at some of our stores and is refunded when you vacate your storage room.

Do I have to pay a security deposit?

Yes, some of our stores do charge a security deposit, like many other storage companies.  Where it is charged, this is equivalent of two weeks rental as standard for domestic storage units.  Larger deposits may be taken for commercial or bespoke storage requirements.  This will be discussed with you when you come to sign your storage agreement.

Are my goods insured?

No goods are not insured automatically.  However, you must ensure your belongings are insured or are similarly protected, whilst they are in storage.  Our team will ask you to confirm this when you come to sign your agreement.  Most household contents policies do not cover goods in storage.  If you do not have suitable insurance in place we can arrange cover through our Customer Goods Protection on a new replacement basis.  If you need more information please speak to our team.

Why do I need my own padlock?

You need your own padlock to ensure that you are the sole key holder for your room. If you don’t have one you can buy one from our Box Shop  – along with any other packaging materials you might need.

Do I pay weekly or monthly?

We invoice customers on a four weekly (twenty eight day) basis payable in advance.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes, we offer a range of discounts including:

  • An introductory offer for new customers – at most stores it’s 50% off storage charges for either eight or twelve weeks’ storage – see our special offers page for the current offers at each store, or call us for more details. This discount provides great value for short term storers, such as home movers.

For longer term storers we also offer the following pre-payment discounts:

  • 5% off storage charge for 6 months prepayment.
  • 10% off storage charge for 12 months prepayment.

For Students – We offer bespoke discounts to students upon production of a valid Student ID Card.

For Members of the Military, Blue Light Services and for Charities – We also offer a 10% discount on production of a valid ID.

From time to time we also have discounts on our boxes and packaging.  Ask for details. T&Cs apply to all offers and store managers reserve the right to withdraw any offers.

Do I have to book a room?

No, not usually.  You can fill in your storage agreement today and move in immediately. However to be guaranteed a room at peak times, or if you want a specific size on arrival, it is advisable to book your room in advance.  The reservation fee is £10 and holds your room for up to 28 days. This reservation fee is refunded against your first invoice for storage.

Can I move in today?

Yes, if there is a room available and reception is open.  A member of our staff will fill in our simple storage agreement with you (this takes a few minutes) and then you can move your goods in straight away.  Please check these FAQs for information on what you need to bring to store.

Do I have to sign a lease?

No you don’t.  You sign a straightforward storage service agreement prior to moving into your room. The agreement comprises a simple “no fuss” contract. The contract takes a few minutes to complete and you can do it online if you prefer.

Do you do removals/van hire?

No, we are purely a self-storage centre.  You can bring your goods in your own vehicle if you have enough space.  We have ample car parking and large loading/unloading areas.

We have a partnership with Enterprise Car Club to help make the move in to store a little easier.  (Ts & Cs apply) However, you are responsible for your van hire and for loading and unloading your belongings.

For those who need or prefer a greater level of support, we can also suggest local removal companies, some of which we have negotiated discounted rates with for Kangaroo customers.

Can I transfer to another storage room if I find I have too much or too little space?

You are welcome to move to another size room at any time, assuming we have a more appropriate size unit available.

How high are your storage rooms?

On average they are 8 feet high, though this may vary dependent on site, type of unit and location of the unit within the building.

What sort of security do you have?

Kangaroo stores incorporate extensive security features including:

  • 24 hour Digital CCTV located both inside and outside the main building monitoring all entrances & exits
  • A sophisticated alarm system
  • Coded electronic gate access to the premises – accessible only with your own personal security mechanism  – either a swipe card, fob or PIN number.  (Not incorporated at our Warrington or Carlisle sites)
  • All rooms are secured with the storer’s padlock ensuring that only the storer has access to their room.
What is the minimum time I can store with you?

Our minimum chargeable storage period is fourteen days – but you can use our storage units for as short a time as you wish. We require fourteen days’ notice of your intention to leave.

Once I have a room how long can I stay?

You are welcome to stay for as long as you require – a fortnight, month, year, or anything beyond – you choose.

Do I have to give you notice to leave?

Yes you do.  We require fourteen days’ notice of your intention to vacate your room provided it is a standard domestic unit, longer notice periods may apply to commercial or bespoke contracts. Thereafter a refund will be processed for the initial security deposit and any unused monies that you have paid.  Notice must be given in writing, currently by post or e-mail.

What can I store?

You can store almost anything in our storage rooms. The only exceptions are:

  • Living items such as animals & plants
  • Hazardous materials such as flammable liquids and explosives - this includes vapes
  • Items that could decompose such as exposed foodstuffs
  • Unauthorised or illegal goods such as firearms etc.
Why do I have to log my entry into the building each time?

It is important that we know who is in our building for lots of reasons. For security for you, your belongings, others and their belongings and, most importantly, for health and safety.

Do you sell boxes and packing materials, and will you deliver them to me?

Yes, we sell an extensive range of packing materials from boxes to bubblewrap – and you don’t need to store with us to buy from our range. View our box shop range online.

Packing materials can be purchased in person or over the phone.  They'll be ready for you to pick up in store.

Will you accept my deliveries?

Yes, there is no need to be onsite waiting for your goods to be delivered.  Our team will take delivery of your goods on your behalf. We sign for the amount of packages received, but not for the contents as this would necessitate us opening your packages. We’ll then send you a text/email to let you know your goods have arrived and keep your delivery in our secure holding area ready for you to collect it and store it in your room.  We will hold your deliveries for up to 24 hours.

Do you have trolleys available?

Yes, there are a number of different sized trolleys and pallet trucks available, and they’re free of charge to use.

In most stores we also have a forklift truck available for any heavier goods, which can be operated on your behalf by one of our trained staff.  This is also free of charge.

Is there someone at the store I can talk to should I have a problem?

There will always be a trained member of staff available during reception opening times.  Just pop into reception and meet our team – we also have complimentary tea and coffee.

Are your storage rooms heated?

No, our rooms are not heated.  However, the temperature within our stores remains fairly constant throughout the year.
