Declutter Your Life: Student Edition

Being a student means many things: late nights, long lie-ins, plenty of coffee, ramen noodles, and making lifelong friends. Another indicator that youโ€™re a real student is just how much stuff you have.

When itโ€™s time to move, you may think youโ€™ll fit everything into one car load. But surprise! You have more things now than when you first arrived. Youโ€™ve got so much stuff that youโ€™re going to need to hire a van to get it all out. Your parents wonโ€™t appreciate having to make several trips and let alone having to fill the garage or spare room at home.

As the end of the term finishes, itโ€™s probably best to start some spring cleaning.ย  You will want to make sure that you get rid of all the useless junk before you start packing. Itโ€™s time to declutter your life. So, whatโ€™s the best way to do that as a student?

Try Out Minimalism

Being a minimalist is a โ€œspecificโ€ kind of lifestyle. Itโ€™s a way to create a simpler and less cluttered space by getting rid of excess things. People who are thinking about becoming a minimalist generally fall into three categories:

  • Letโ€™s go! Where are the bin bags?
  • No way, I donโ€™t have a problem with too much stuff, I have a problem with too little space.
  • Sounds great, but where do I start?

If youโ€™re a beginner and are looking to simplify your life, here are a few tips for you to get started:

  • Write down everything you own
  • Clear away rubbish
  • Discard any duplicates
  • Declare a clutter-free zone
  • Travel light

Living a minimalistic lifestyle brings plenty of benefits. Not only does it help you figure out what you donโ€™t need, but it also allows you to make room for whatโ€™s important. With less clutter, your life will be simpler.

Sometimes itโ€™s better to only hold onto the things that spark joy in your life, says lifestyle guru Marie Kondo. Do you really need that tatty notebook you never use? Does that pair of jeans you havenโ€™t ever worn ย really need a space in your drawers? Toss them! Or better yet, donate them. Keep those joy sparking items and remove the rest; if it doesnโ€™t spark joy, you donโ€™t need it in your life!

But before you commit, why not put everything in storage first to see whether you miss them?

Why not try a 30-day challenge and see how you feel?

Consider Self Storage

A great way to declutter your life is to consider self-storage. Try and be ruthless when youโ€™re clearing out. You will then be able to decide what you want to put in storage more easily. Also, try and think seasonally. Do you really need those snow boots and that huge coat in the middle of July?

Be realistic and think about what you could sell in the future. You may not want that glitter lava lamp anymore, but someone else could be a collector of retro lights (who knows!?). So, put it in self-storage until youโ€™re ready to sell it on eBay. One personโ€™s trash is another personโ€™s treasure.

Rooms and Spaces

There are different areas of a home which need to be separated and organised. You canโ€™t just dive into the clutter headfirst. As a student, you probably have separate spaces which all need organising such as:

  • Desk/study space
  • Wardrobe and drawers
  • Under the bed! (Weโ€™re sure thereโ€™s stuff under there)
  • Your bathroom
  • Your kitchen cupboard/food
  • The walls (posters and clippings)

We suggest getting three different bags โ€“ one for things to bin or donate, one to put in storage and one to take away with you. Another option is to opt for boxes! That way you can slot your boxes easily into your storage unit. Kangaroo Self Storage can even cater to your packing needs and provide you with boxes and packaging!
